This two-day public event focuses on the European Union as an advocate of liberal values such as human rights, democracy and rule of law, and the tensions between these aspirations and European security measures. Joschka Fischer, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, will deliver the keynote speech.
The conference focuses on the European Union as an advocate of liberal values such as human rights, democracy and rule of law, and the tensions between these aspirations and European security measures. Over the past 15 years, these values and especially the EU's role as its preacher, have increasingly become a source of conflict and contestation. Especially with regard to terrorism and crime, the EU has developed far-reaching measures in the fields of data retention and fighting radicalisation, but simultaneously emphasises the respect for fundamental rights and the rule of law.
The EU stands in the liberal internationalist tradition that treats bad governance, discrimination and repression as root causes of conflict and insecurity, but addressing these problems, however, seems to render a paradoxical breach in citizens' privacy and security.
